Data Over Cable Service Interface
Specification (DOCSIS) is a standard for cable
modems that defines the interface requirements
for a cable modem involved in high-speed data
transmission over a cable television network.
The objective of the specification
is to ensure interoperability between cable networks
and cable modems.
The certified cable modem
project also provides cable modem equipment suppliers
with a fast, market-oriented method for attaining
cable industry acknowledgment of DOCSIS compliance
and has resulted in high-speed modems being certified
for retail sale. Cable Television Laboratories,
Inc. (CableLabs) is a research and development
consortium established by members of the Cable
TV industry in 1988. The DOCSIS project was developed
by CableLabs and the latest version is 2.0 Specifications
are laid down for the interface with the customer
premises equipment as well as the network side
equipment, the RF and the Operating System support
interfaces as well as the Baseline Privacy specifications.
