:: Security of cable modems
Like any other Internet device,
the cable modem is not fully secure. Moreover
as there are several subscribers connected to
the same cable, vulnerability is only increased.
Security can be further infringed if you have
file and print sharing turned on.
There is a difference between using
your phone modem and a cable modem. When you use
a phone modem and dial to your ISP the modem at
the ISP end assigns a random Internet (IP) address
to your system. This changes every time you dial
up and connect. With a cable network, your IP
address stays the same. This increases the vulnerability.
Moreover the way the cable company sets up the
network over your local region or neighborhood,
a virtual local area network (LAN) gets established.
Anyone with the same cable feed as yours could
theoretically access your system. Another issue
is that the cable connection is always on. If
your PC is on, it means that access to your system
is available at all times and the security risk
is increased.
It is recommended that you use
difficult to break passwords to access your system
and, perhaps, install a firewall. Install the
latest anti-virus software to protect your system.
Also remember to log off those software applications
that have your sensitive, personal information
such as Quicken or Money. Disable print and file
sharing through your PC’s control panel
and settings.
