An online speed test is available at the following URL to check the download speed at your cable connection. A sample file (small in size) is sent through your connection and the speed is measured and shown in kbps.

There are several resources available that facilitate a similar speed test. All of them seem to work on the same principle. You connect to their site and enable them to send a pre-determined file to your system and monitor the time it takes to complete this transmission (and return transmission at times). The time can be converted to compute the speed in kbps. You should keep in mind that what is being measured is the speed at the slowest link in the entire chain between your system and the speed-check site. Thus you cannot say for sure that this shows the performance of your cable modem with accuracy. You should choose a speed test that is originated from a location close to you.
