There are compelling reasons for you to buy a cable modem rather than rent it. Most DOCSIS compliant cable modems of reputed brands are available at around $ 100. Bargain deals may bring you prices as low as $ 70. Compare this with the higher rent that the service provider would charge you for renting the cable modem from them. If the difference is, say, $ 10 per month, you could recover the cost of buying a new modem in as little as 10 months and would have savings thereafter. At the same time the issues of service and repair and obsolescence are on your head. If you are likely to be moving into an area that may not have cable modem service, you could opt for renting the modem instead of buying it. When you buy a DOCSIS compliant modem the chances of obsolescence in the near term are remote.
