:: Business Class Services

All the national providers in cable internet have a special service offering for small to high volume business users.

There are different service packs that are available depending on the requirements. Thus the offerings could include allocation of one or more dynamic or static IP addresses. (Static IP addresses would be very useful to business users for networking, having VPNs, and for other forms of interaction through the internet). The other options pertain to the speed offered for downstream (2 Mbps to 4 Mbps) and upstream (384 kbps to 1 Mbps) transmission. Larger business users are also offered Cable Modems with a hub and router arrangement that will be suitable for routing the internet access through the internal network.

These service providers can substitute your internet service provider (ISP) if you use the ISP service only to access the Internet. On the other hand if you are using services like AOL that provide not only the access, but also content, you can choose to use the cable internet provider to connect to a service like AOL and access its portal for content and e mail activity.

The most significant feature being offered to business users is the security aspect, whereby some service providers offer DES level security encryption. The effectiveness of this is not known. Generally a firewall is the best solution to safeguard your system.

Most cable companies offer business services using proprietary cable modem products from Motorola, Nortel, Terayon and Com21, among others. These modems may be directly connected to a business' local area network (LAN) through a standard Ethernet link. For added security, some business customers also install a router between their cable modem and LAN.

Cisco Systems Inc. has developed the first integrated cable modem router product line. The Cisco uBR904 includes a standards-based DOCSIS cable modem; Cisco router with firewall capabilities; and four-port Ethernet hub in a compact design. Cisco's uBR924 also adds two RJ-11 ports to support IP telephone and fax services. While this device is attractive for business users, it can only be used in markets where cable companies are offering cable modem services with standards-based DOCSIS equipment.
